What to do?

The great waves at the beaches surrounding SJDS call surfers from all over the world. The main SJDS beach is NOT a surfing beach, so don’t despair when you see the beautiful but small lapping waves. Surfing beaches include Playa Maderas to the north and Playas Remanso, Hermosa and Yankee to the south. Get to those with a 4-wheel drive, shared taxi, Casa Oro morning shuttle, rides sponsored by the surf shops, or hop on the 10:30am boat taxi and return at 4:30pm (Maderas only). Prices vary.

  • LA FLOR WILDLIFE RESERVE [20k south of SJDS. US$30 p/p]

Watching Olive Ridley turtles lay eggs and the hatchlings race to sea to avoid becoming a vulture’s or ghost crab’s dinner are miraculous sights worth the longish rough ride and price. Between July and January thousands of these turtles arrive at La Flor beach to do their thing. Tours are at night for 4-6 hours. Don’t leave this attraction until your last day as it can be cancelled for various natural reasons.

Book your tour through Casa Oro, one of the few places that protects these endangered creatures. Watch a half-hour turtle video and use the infra-red lights that your guide provides for the actual viewing.

  • DA FLYIN FROG ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it La Ruta Chocolata ½ k from the new Alcaldia building; $25 pp; closed Mondays)

Sure to excite as you fly through the jungle canopy for 2.5 kilometers on a zipline high above the ground, marveling at the beauty of the SJDS bay. Ziplining not for you? Rent a horse instead (US$10 an hour) and ride through beautiful jungle flora to a special petroglyph. Currently this activity is by appointment, so book it through Casa Oro where you will be picked up and returned.

Facing SJDS Bay, note the large statue of Jesus on top of the hill on the right. This steep, 30-minute hike (you can also drive or take a taxi) starts at the Pacific Marlin development entryway. The panoramic view of SJDS and Costa Rica (and the last 93 steps) are sure to take your breath away!

There are several great Spanish schools in town. Spend a week, a month, or longer honing your Spanish speaking skills.

Saturday night is a lot of fun at Lago Azul for Latin Karaoke night! A very nice audience claps for everyone, no matter how well (or not) you sing. And English speakers don’t despair, they have lots of English songs too. Hotel California anyone? Lago Azul is located on the beach street. It’s the last restaurant before the walk to the pier. (10:00 pm to 2:00 am).

There’s only one real place to dance…Crazy Crab Disco! A fun place for everyone of all ages, this dancehall gives you a chance to mingle and party with the local Nicaraguans. Dance to Latin, electronic, and popular DJ music. There’s often a special show on Saturday nights and you will find a great live band, EXTASIS, on Sunday nights getting the crowd going. Light menu and lots of specials on drinks. OVER 18 ONLY !!!

Try the new Atlantic City Casino, across from the entrance to the pier. Drink and food specials, slots and more.

Show off your skills, join a game of pool at the two places in town.

For a real fishing tour experience (trolling or bottom fishing), go out with a local Nicaraguan family on their panga boat! Prices vary, but generally $40 an hour for the boat gets you fishing equipment, expertise on where the fish are, fish cleaning and scaling, a beautiful boat tour to the other bays surrounding San Juan del Sur, and anything else you may need to have a positive fishing experience.
